So overall I enjoyed this book. The story was interesting and I really liked many of the characters. The concepts of the furies was super interesting and I really appreciated the magic system.

My issues with the book are many though.
  • Apparently people have an impressive habit of not dying despite would that should have killed them. It is very unbelievable.
  • Amara not actively participating in the battle but narrating the whole battle. I had a lot of hopes for this character for most of the book. She seemed strong and competent and I appreciated her. I was hoping she would be a more vital part of the battle.
  • The battle was longer than it should have been. It was drawn out to a disgusting degree.
  • The tribal characters felt inappropriately based on the indigenous peoples. I think this is a massive mark against this book and the author should really examine and deconstruct his thoughts.
  • The violence against women was pretty extreme and didn't advance the plotline. The murderous slaver holder did not seem to have much influence on the plot. We could have cut that storyline and still ended up in the same place 80 pages quicker.
  • The women were also pretty one or maybe two dimensional. You can tell this was written by a man without a lot of female input.
