Horse by Geraldine Brooks

Wow. Brooks is a master at piecing together a story from historical tidbits. Her blend of fact and fiction is seamless. She weaves different story threads and characters into a truly inspiring novel. And she blends history with current affairs effortlessly as well. This novel is the whole deal: a historic account of the famous Kentucky born racehorse Lexington, an unflinching portrayal of slavery and treatment of black Americans in the racing world as well as nationwide during the pre civil war era, the story of equestrian painting, a teaser tale of Jackson Pollack, the current state of police violence against black Americans, a romance, and the fascinating world of museum studies.
