The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft
2.0
Turns out, the horror was having consensual sexual relations with Pacific Islanders.
The story is ok. I understand how influential this tale is, but for my liking it takes way too long to get to the actual meat and potatoes of the story. Maybe I'd feel differently if I didn't know most of the story beats before going in. I also found the twist at the end to be kind of lame.
The biggest knock of stars for me is the underlying racist themes. No matter how much Lovecraft fanboys will say that his views shouldn't impact the rating of a story, I firmly disagree. His views are deeply ingrained in his works and pretending like they aren't is willfully ignorant.
Not one star because hey, cool fish people are still cool fish people.
