The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan

4.5

4.5 stars… An amazing book covering maybe the most important day in WW2. The work done by Cornelius Ryan in compiling all of these accounts is mind blowing. The segments preceding the storming of the beach (The Wait and The Night) were exciting too, which I did not expect going in. This might be important to some people since The Day doesn’t come into play until the last 3rd of the book.

The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan is perhaps the greatest and most visceral war scene in the history of film. This book proves that 20 mins does not do the story justice. It would be hard to imagine anything braver than the men who stormed the beach - many of whom gave their life and knew going in that the mortality rate could be 80% - 90%. Many of those accounts only survive today because of this book.
