Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson

She sure can write. Unlike most mysteries (where I'm essentially reading for the plot and overlooking the so-so writing), with her I'm reading for the writing and don't particularly care about the plot. Eventually stuff happens that connects it all and the mysteries are solved, and I don't really mind one way or the other, I've just been enjoying her work. She writes non-mysteries as well--she can clearly write anything. She's kind of awesome.

This one's 4 stars (which is still great) rather than 5 because I wasn't quite as moved as I usually am by her work, and because the plethora of White Men from the 1970s were hard for me to keep track of. There was a Ray, a Rick, a Henry, a Len, and a Barry, and they were married to Barbaras and Margarets etc. and they all blurred together. (And I feel that's on her, not on me.)

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
