Dark Rise
by C.S. Pacat
"My whole life, all anyone's ever wanted was to possess me. The only one who ever set me free was you."
C.S. Pacat has done it once again with this ya queer fantasy debut novel. Dark rise is both whimsical and dark, a beautiful, heart-wrenching coming-of-age exploration of free will in the face of destiny.
While Will Kempen and James St. Clair are very reminiscent of Damen and Laurent from Captive Prince, Pacat has created an entirely new world that stands out on its own with magic, unicorns (yes, unicorns), portal fantasy, amazing found family (!!!), and enemies to lovers like I have never seen it done before.
Cannot recommend this book (and Pacat as an author) enough!
