The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
4.0
A Sherlockian mystery featuring an eccentric lady detective and her dutiful, mind-enhanced assistant, who are searching for a killer using genetically-altered plants among manipulative aristocrats and corrupt bureaucrats while the city is under attack by a leviathan. Per usual for Bennett, this was a wildly creative premise that mostly works in execution. While I wasn't drawn to the characters, I was enthralled by the plot and world-building, and am curious about the wider conspiracy hinted at by the closing revelations so will read the second installment.
