The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz

5.0

The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best
"Doing your best is taking the action because you love it, not because you're expecting a reward."

Loved this ending chapter, and overall, this book was extremely insightful and helpful in recognizing my own problems and areas in which I could improve. The Fourth Agreement made me think of the idea that "the end justifies the means" - often times, we only do things because we want a reward, but forget to enjoy the actual process of doing something. Perhaps if we focused on the action itself like Ruiz implies, we would find joy throughout the entire process, rather than depending on joy at the very end. Don't hold yourself back and stop doubting yourself: do your best no matter what circumstance you're in and accept that "your best" will vary depending on the day and that that's perfectly okay.

Ruiz brings forth the point that freedom has to do with the human spirit rather than a political stance, our circumstances, etc. Feed your spirit and nourish your soul, and find freedom in that. Don't limit yourself by giving yourself a strict definition/personality to stick to: we are humans, and humans have ever-changing traits; embrace that concept and you will find freedom. We don't have to conform to certain roles if we find them too restrictive; freedom is being who we are.

Overall, this book was remarkably enlightening, and I know that I will definitely be re-reading it and picking it up whenever I'm in a rut or just want to be enlightened again. Highly recommend to everyone and anyone!
