White Ivy by Susie Yang
4.0
4/5 stars!
White Ivy is the story of Ivy Lin, told from childhood and into her twenties. She and her parents immigrated to the United States from China, so Ivy is stuck between two cultures and ways of being and struggles to find her place.
Ivy is a fierce and determined character, with loads of flaws, who strives to get to the top - no matter what.
This book is really well done with an explosive twist that I certainly saw coming but almost didn’t believe it would actually happen… so when it did I was left in a state of shock.
It is not your typical thriller, but it is a thriller no less. I have not read books of this style before and was delighted to have had this reading experience! Yang has crafted a delightful slow burn that is both compelling and intriguing.
This novel is about family and family dynamics, particularly immigrant family, and provided an inspection of, often complicated and complex, relationships between mother-daughter and grandmother-granddaughter. I found it to be beautifully written and very eye-opening, leaving me with a lot to think about.
I can’t say I truly liked Ivy…and I don’t think you’re supposed to… yet I couldn’t help but feel for her.
I’ll be keeping my eye out for more of Yang’s work in the future!
