James Potter and the Hall of Elders' Crossing by G. Norman Lippert

3.0

First and foremost, it is important to remember that this is Fan Fiction. It is well written, well thought out, well plotted, but still fan fiction. Mr Lippert has taken his own ideas of "what comes next" in the world of Harry Potter and put it to paper. He is obviously a writer outside of these stories as they are well crafted, well written, and not full of grammatical errors (one of my biggest pet peeves on fan fiction most of the time).

Mr Lippert is very clear that he owes a great deal to JK Rowling for creating the magical world of Harry Potter and the characters within this world. He has just taken his own idea of what happened next and put them to paper for all share.

This first of 3 stories about Harry and Ginny's son James is interesting, with a solid story line that is in the same feeling of the Harry Potter stories, set in a familiar world of Hogwarts. Mr Lippert tries to stay true to what Ms Rowling has already revealed about the world of Harry Potter.

Mr Lippert makes no bones that this is fan fiction, so he may not stay true to cannon for all those die hard fans, but has set out to write for himself (and others who want to read it) his own ideas. What he does best is when he writes for characters either briefly mentioned in the Harry Potter series or characters he has introduced for his own story telling. James Potter is an interesting character and as this first book went on, he became more of a fleshed out, well rounded character. His friends Ralph and Zane are fun and bring that sense of that Harry, Ron, and Hermione had, without duplicating it exactly. Where this story stumbles a bit is when he is writing for Harry, Ginny, or really any character heavily featured in the Harry Potter series. And this is, I think, for obvious reasons. Ms Rowling knows these characters best, she has their voice so a part of her that to have someone else write for them is never quite the same. That is not to say that Mr Lippert writes these characters poorly, they are just not the same ones we have grown to love (or hate) through Ms Rowling's writing. When he is writing for the characters he has introduced for this story, these are done very well, with a true voice coming through, and developing their own identies as characters.

So, now I am off to read the second of the James Potter stories. Intrigued and becoming more invested in these new characters.
