The Midnight Zoo by Sonya Hartnett
4.0

Short and beautifully poetically written about a couple of uprooted kids who wander into a zoo in the remains of a bombed-out town and spend the night there talking with the animals. Felt more like allegory than story, so people who want lots of exciting action might be disappointed, but people who enjoy 'one-room plays' that run on thoughtful dialogue will appreciate it. Though the story is set during WW2, it purposely doesn't go into lots of detail about it (not even giving names of countries, political figures, etc), so the thoughts and feelings expressed apply to warfare/human nature in general.
