If Only I Had Told Her
by Laura Nowlin
I cried multiple times while reading this book and tears streamed down my face as I stared at my ceiling for 10 minutes after I finished. This book was so needed after how the first one ended, not only getting Autumn and Jack’s point of view of life after Finny, but getting his point of view on what I would consider to be the best day and a half of his life with Autumn.
Surprisingly, I found myself getting the most emotional when reading Jack’s point of view. When I read If He Had Been With Me, Jack was just a side character that, in all honesty, I didn’t pay much attention to. In a platonic way, he loved Finny as much as Autumn loved him romantically, and my heart was in shambles for him.
To me, this book shows that bad things can happen to good people, and while it’s perfectly okay to be crushed by it, it’s also important to push through and live our lives in a way that would make them proud.
Sometimes I find it funny that I can become so emotionally connected to fictional characters, but I think Finny explained it best when he said “I understand this much: Autumn lives in this world and the fictions of her mind or those written by others like her.” While fictional, Autumn and Finny are very real in my little world.
