The best way I can think of to describe Little Red Death is The Bloody Chamber meets inception in a modern day murder mystery!
Lyla Rundell is a police detective who, after a murder victim is found in the woods with a note addressed to her, is on the hunt for a murderer who is posing victims like stories from Grimm’s fairy tales.
But this book is not like any other murder mystery. By about half way though it suddenly flips everything you know on its head and quickly becomes magic realism with some horror elements. I honestly almost stopped reading at that point (it’s Inception-level mind bending for a little while), but AK Benedict’s beautiful writing kept me reading and I’m glad I persevered to the end. I’m honestly tempted to re-read it and see if I can spot more of what actually was happening now I know how it ends! It has all the hallmarks of a book that needs to be studied to be fully understood. I just wished I’d known it was going to be a genre mash-up going in. I
