Darcy Coates keeps her feet planted in the YA camp with this story of high schoolers fighting a monster in a small, weird town. It’s actually a pretty basic monster movie type thing but creative and scary in a way that’s pleasantly surprising. It has a quirky mood, the town is interesting, there’s lots and lots of red thread and people climbing into holes. It’s all just also just such an annoyingly wholesome and vanilla TV movie for teens that it feels slight. But then the monster is actually spooky and it starts having good horror moments and you think, I can work with this. Fun book for teens.
