Friend of the Devil by Ed Brubaker

5.0

A bit slower than Reckless, indulging in the world and characters simply because it can. As a result when it can go to darker places than the previous volumes, it hits harder too. I’m incredibly curious about the seeming present day narration, reflecting back on tragedy and love lost. I can’t wait for volume 10 or whatever when we finally hit the present day.

There is a ghost haunting this series, and that ghost’s name is Ronald Reagan. Without dropping his name, we’ve got two volumes now where the plot is secretly driven by the evils of the Reagan administration. I don’t even know if this is intentional as opposed to just a book featuring the social sins of the ‘80s.
