The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

5.0

Breathtaking from beginning to end, especially the audio version that's masterfully narrated by Jayne Entwistle. As England prepares to enter World War II, eleven-year-old Ada lives in London with her younger brother Jamie and their physically and emotionally abusive mother. When she and Jamie manage to get on a train transporting children out of London, life opens up in unexpected ways. Ada's prickliness is her way of covering up the fear and anger that have been building through her young life, and it makes her a compelling narrator. Bradley does not shy away from the horrors of the war or of abusive parents. Ada will stay with you long after you finish the story.
