Pierre and Jean by Guy de Maupassant
4.0

This is another random pick from the "1001 Books..." list. The introduction by Maupassant was a bit hard to get into, mainly because he referenced things and people from France in the late 1800s that I am not familiar with. However, the actual novel was very good. It is about a family in a small town in France. One of the brother's is left an inheritance by a family friend who passes away. The novel focuses on both brothers' reactions to this inheritance as well as the parents' reactions. Very interesting study of family dynamics and how they can change.

It can be a bit slow if you are used to fast-paced contemporary books because it describes a lot of the thought process of the characters in relation to the main issue in the book instead of just showing what the characters actually do. I liked that- it made the characters seem more real and made me understand why some characters did things even when I didn't agree with their actions.

Worth reading if you are interested in late 1890s French/European society and/or family dynamics when faced with a difficult situation and are OK with a slower-paced book.
