This is a must-read for anyone who uses healthcare in the U.S. (Which is… all of us.) I found this book powerful and thought-provoking. “Enjoyed” might not be the right word—because it stirs a full range of emotions: disappointment, anger, hope, and a call to action. 

 

I was already aware of the persistent issues of systemic racism in healthcare, but this book deepened my understanding. It’s disheartening to see that even the most respected institutions often fail to live up to their mission of caring for all. 

 

As an E.D. nurse and paramedic, I firmly believe you cannot truly serve others unless you are willing to learn about those who are different from you—and meet them where they are, not where you think they should be. 

 

My only complaint? The book is too short! I would have gladly read three volumes—one diving deeper into each part of Dr. Blackstock’s life and the complex challenges she explores. Her insights are invaluable, and her writing is incredibly engaging. I finished the book wanting more.
