The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
by Carson McCullers
An American classic. I'm not sure why this book isn't more talked about or on more Best Of lists. It might be because it's pretty bleak. It doesn't have much of a plot; it's more several intertwining character studies over the course of a year in a small town in the South. It's the American novel that's most like a Russian novel (think Dostoyevsky) that I can recall.
