I did not expect to like this book, and I truly didn't expect to LOVE this book. The characters are well fleshed-out, the description of realms and creatures is spectacular, and the plot is fast-paced and well-conceived. This book is AWESOME and I'm glad I have the whole set because I am about to devour it.

I will say the story is a touch predictable, in the sense of "something is obviously being kept from this girl, and she doesn't seem particularly interested in discerning what that might be because her focus is on her own self-righteous pursuits, and when she does find out it's going to fuck shit up BIG time," but it's not too serious, and isn't presented in a way that took me out of the story. If anything, I was mad Arwen wasn't seeking the answers, because I certainly was. But it was a really fun, light read. I had been in a bit of a slump before this book (and the one I read to get back into reading, immediately before this book, almost put me back into one), and this got me excited to read the rest of the series, so I'm counting it as a significant win.

And, as a personal aside, Kane is now one of my favorite book boyfriends, flaws and all. I really like him, and I love Arwen as well. She's now a book girlfriend. They are so fierce, and so funny. I love them, and I want them to love me, irrational though it may be.
