The young narrator (nameless) meeets Maxim de Winter in Monte Carlo. He is twice her age and a rich widow. They marrry after knowing each other only a few weeks and he takes her home to his house called Manderley. Once there, the young narrator obsesses with the widow’s deceased wife, Rebecca. Everyone loved and adored Rebecca. She was perfect, fearless, and beautiful. But this house is also filled with secrets, which reveal themselves in time.
Knowing that Rebecca was written in 1938 is what really made this book intriguing for me. Rebecca is a woman that defies the societal norms of that time and that is what made me like her even though she was not extremely likeable. The narrator annoyed me with her naïveté but it was so spot on for a barely 20 something year old that it made the story believable. Young love can be so blinding.
