As I have come to expect from KF Breene, this book was excellent. The characters are complex (even though some we are already familiar with from Demigods from San Francisco series - also fabulous), the world building wonderful, the writing great! I LOVE how this author creates absolutely plausible characters with flaws and quirks, capable of great things and great accidental mishaps. This particular book (part 1 of a planned duology) was quite action packed and a little lighter on the humor than some of her other books. Altho the humor is one of my favorite things about this author's writing, i didn't really feel the lack here - it was an intense story about intense people and stopping the humor-level at snark was solidly in keeping with the tone of the plot.
There is no need to have read the previous series to follow along here, however, it does enrich the 1st third or so if you do since the FMC interacts with her found family from that series. The rest is all new relationships, all new world building, all new challenges! Since i "knew" Daisy already from the Demigods series, i was already excited to spend a whole book with her - i.e., she's a fabulous kick-ass FMC that isn't inconsistent with her toughness (regardless of situation or love interest) and isn't annoying in being soooo independent that she's more a tag-line than a real person. The MMC is all also interesting; i'm not sold on him just yet (it's a duology, so mind the cliff), but he's complex enough to be intriguing about where he'll end up and how he gets there.
Long story long: i love this author, i loved this world, i love this book as the first in a series extender-duology, i hope i can keep reading about this wonderful world (and any KF Breene thinks up) for years to come. Go read it! (in fact, go read her entire catalogue :) :) )
