I enjoyed this book a lot. Eliza Lucas is a fascinating historical figure, and I love that someone has written her story as a novel. My issue with it is that the book deals with slavery and the relationship between enslaveder and enslaved in a very modern way. I feel that the author was so focused on making Eliza loveable, she took her out of the time she lived in and the view of the world Eliza would have had. The anachronisms of it all pulled me out of the book several times. As a historian it bothered me. It is still a good book, but I wish it was better about being honest with the slavery issues.
Graphic: Racism, Slavery, and Colonisation
Moderate: Death, Miscarriage, and Police brutality
There is some historical white washing of events, views, and people.
