The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

3.0

An intriguing premise that hooked me in but weakened in the middle and failed to deliver completely at the end. The setting was vibrant and richly depicted and I loved the variety of female characters struggling to find themselves and their place in the world, especially protective, poor counselor Louise and striving, dedicated detective Judyta. However, the plot was like someone trying and failing to drive stick shift - fits and starts with a mere page or two in one perspective or timeline before flitting to another. It was tragic but lacked propulsion.

Spoiler

I felt really bad for Alice with her cheating, uncaring husband even before the revelation she accidentally drunkenly killed Bear. It was good at the end that there was some consequences, at least for the male Van Laars though not for the pretentious, despicable John Paul. While I'm glad Barbara broke free, and Carl and Louise were redeemed, it was kind of a whimper of an ending too me because all these things quickly came to light in the last few chapters after the investigation and time-hopping dragged on and on, adding more characters but less depth.
