A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende

4.0

I learned more than I ever thought reading this book, and that is truly the highest compliment I can give to a historical fiction novel. This opened my eyes to a conflict I never fully understood until now and a country’s history that I’ve barely been aware of. South America has had its fair share of political instability even within my lifetime, but I was grateful to see Chile’s story told through someone who lived through it herself. Allende is a masterful story teller and I’ll continue to read her work!

My only very small complaint (and the reason it’s not 5 stars) is that by nature this was very political. And while I agree with all the convictions the author displays, I wish she trusted me, as a reader, to make that conclusion myself. I felt led along by a very heavy hand at some point in the story, and perhaps that colored my enjoyment. Still, it was a very necessary story and I hope others such as myself can be grateful for the freedoms and privileges we possess, because it’s not guaranteed.
