Oh no! Everyone hates Bettina.

Here's my perspective on her: she is very young, and she is treated like shit by all of her elders. They treat her like a moron, they lie to her, she's supposed to be the queen but they belittle her constantly. She has no independence except with her art, which all her relatives are condescending to her about. Her godmother calls her freakling! Caspion is the only one who has ever been a friend to her, he tried avenging her and failed and basically had to leave the kingdom because of that. Then he comes back with his tail between his legs and about to be assassinated so of course she thinks she loves him! This whole book takes place over the span of like a week, so I'm not exactly surprised she takes a while to warm up to Trehan.

I loved that she was so mortified that he would see her through her memories, but his understanding of her ends up building trust between them. Other than Cas, he is the only person who doesn't talk down to her, and it takes her a minute to realize that. And he loves her artwork and her perspective. I just feel like Bettina is very young and has a lot of trauma, it's ok for her to take a week to warm up to Trehan even if he has forsaken his entire kingdom for her. That's on him. Both characters had a lot of growth in the book. Trehan has had like 900 years of fighting with his Dacian cousins in stupid feuds, I think the fact that he has to accept Cas as part of her life is a good thing-- dude needs to learn about not making drama with everyone.

Secondary characters in this book are hilarious, Morgana and the sylph and of course Lothaire shows up. And lord knows I love a tournament. I loved this one.
