It’s evident this is Kuang’s first novel, but not in a bad way. I believe my expectations were set too high by friends who had read the book previously and felt emotional over the events. They hit me hard, of course especially in the current climate, but I feel that they would have hit harder if I’d felt more compelled to finish this book quicker. I wasn’t motivated to pick it up in the same way as other Kuang novels. Excited for the next books in the trilogy!
