Last Stand
by Rachel E. Carter
I love this series, but I don’t think I could rate this book any higher than three stars. My feelings are all over the place because this was one stressful, emotional book unlike the first three. As you would expect from a conclusion, the story in Last Stand is much darker and the stakes are increasingly high and urgent. There are so many painful scenes. The ending was bittersweet (I almost got teary eyed—but I couldn’t support it).
This will probably not be coherent, so forgive me. What I did not like was Ryiah’s recklessness. It was sort of endearing in the other books, but not in this one. She fails to learn from her prior mistakes. Just because her brashness worked for her before doesn’t mean it always will, and so she comes across really, really stupid. I got some serious second-hand embarrassment from both her stupid decisions to her, at times, over-the-top hysteria.
My biggest issue, however, concerns Prince Darren. I can’t even begin to explain his problems. The things he says and does to Ryiah in this book just blows my mind. The ending tried to redeem him, but Lord…I can’t forgive him. He knew his brother was not a good person, but chose to believe him over Ryiah.
Ryiah and Darren are not good for each other. They don’t have a healthy level of trust nor do they communicate effectively. The biggest problem was their lack of communication. And Ryiah not communicating with Darren about his brother created a whole mess. The epilogue was beautiful, but I refuse to accept that ending.
The biggest winner in this series is Priscilla. I’m proud of that girl. And despite her playing a smaller part than Ryiah and Darren, she seems to be the one that learned from her mistakes and her flaws. Kudos to her.
