The Monuments Men took me entirely by surprised. Before starting to read, I wondered how a story such as this needed 400+ pages to tell. Was I ever wrong. Although I have read many books on WWII and am well aware of the atrocities, I have not fully realized the impact on both that era - and our era today. Using the whole-sale theft of art (read history of our civilization) as a back-drop, Edsel tells the compelling story of WWII. This story is filled with unlikely heroes and heroines - passionate people of great integrity who risked their lives to preserve our history. The Nazi theft of art and belongings has long been told in smidgeons and bits, but the scale of that theft and the impact on individuals and entire societies is difficult to realize on a piecemeal basis. Edsel tells this tale in a way that gives insight and understanding to the monumental impact of those Nazi actions.
