When I read plays I always tell myself that I need to read more. I really enjoy plays. they are in one sense easy to read because they are generally shorter than a novel and go by faster because they are mainly dialogue. But on the other hand, plays are often deep, depressing, and leave you thinking about all the themes and motifs. This is the second Tennessee Williams play that I have read, and although nothing can beat The Glass Managerie (a five star read for me) this was also a wonderful read.
Depressing? Yes. Dark? Absolutely. Worth the anguish? For sure! This is not a story that you read to feel good but a story that will stick with you. It sounds like there are a lot of parallels to Williams' real life. Williams' writing is witty and intelligent and his characters come to life easily. It is interesting to note how important plays were at the time. In our day and age we don't have plays written like this and we don't respect the art like it was respected back in the day. I am glad we had playwrights like Williams and Miller to still read and enjoy today.
