Caught by the Scot by Karen Hawkins

3.0

3.5 stars. A little drawn out/slow in parts, and didn’t really make my heart swell, but it’s witty and refreshing. The conflicts/obstacle to the relationship in this book feel very real and I really wasn’t sure how they would make it work. I think it’s awesome and exemplary that Thea won’t stand for a marriage that’s not what she deserves, even if it is to a man she loves. There are several characters who seem like they’re going to be stock characters, or played as one dimensionally villainous or obnoxious, but then are handled with nuance. There are five star romances that make you squee and make you think, then there are romances that deliver on the fluff and squee but don’t hold up on close examination, and there are romances that don’t make you squee, but are very thoughtfully crafted and appreciable in subtler ways. This book is one in that last category. It’s not one that I want to shout from the rooftops, but it’s solid and I’d recommend it if the tropes are your catnip or if, like me, you’re a huge consumer of historical romance audiobooks (Gary Furlong does a great job!).
