I wanted to love this book so much, it has all my favorite things.
Dark academia? Check.
Mystery? Check.
Thriller? Check.
Academic Competition? Check.
Meaningful Representation? ... and check.
But, alas, it was too good to be true. The plot felt flimsy, the characters two dimensional, the motivations were unfounded. I know this book is about the four friends, but we don't really see them or get to know them at all, except for one. The book switches gears constantly, like it doesn't yet know what it wanted to be.
I do think Katie Zhao has a lot of potential to create something amazing with these themes, this just wasn't it - for me.
