Enter into this expecting very little Macbeth, Reid uses the play extremely loosely to frame her own story, to the point that I wondered - why bother making it about Macbeth at all, and not, an original creation set in a fictional Scotland?
I have a laundry list of criticique but with all that said, I wolfed this down in a day while I was sick.
The prose was poetic, and I enjoyed the metaphorical/aphoristic repetitions to a point. There was an atmosphere of tense, almost sickening dread at the grimy, base nature of the setting. Basically, it hooked me on vibes, and my curiosity to see how such a weak character got herself out of her predicament. I did like the spin on Macbeth's Witches andhow the joint power of the women who came before Roscille allowed her to defeat her oppressor.
TLDR - plot, characterisation, themes aren't particulalry well done but I got through on gothic vibes
