I should've started a counter for how many times we used hot cocoa as a stand-in to remind the reader this is a cozy town. Except instead of being cozy, my blood pressure would just rise every time the MC spoke. The warmth and comfort felt deeply forced, with every side character being so cartoonishly kind that they could've just as well been robots specifically programmed to cater to the main character. It also made the stakes feel non-existent, because every time something bad happened, the power of love and friendship would fix it within about two chapters. What little we did see of the side characters having their own identity felt like a very obvious sequel setup, and because I am working on being less of a hater, I will simply not be reading it.
