this book is one of those prequels where the author clearly just loves the characters too much to let them go so she wrote this and made a lot of money. don’t get me wrong, i had a fun time reading this and getting immersed in carrie’s story, but it didn’t say much or add much to ‘we were liars.’ i wish i felt more invested in carrie and pfeff’s romance and that his death was revealed with more, idk, bravado? but it fell sort of flat. and a lot of the things it touched on - beauty standards, family obligations, sexual assault - weren’t explored as deeply as i would have liked them to be.
