What an extraordinary read, even after letting everything percolate for a day I'm still not sure how to feel about it.

I can understand the criticisms others have of the writing style and the pacing, but it wasn't particularly an issue for me. There are long stretches of the book where not too much is happening, especially contrasted with the last fifth or so of the book which is more or less constant action and important events...however for me that rings true with how a colonising attempt might be - long periods of nothing much and mundane daily grind interspersed with major events, human generated punctuated equilibrium, if you will.

This book went in directions I didn't necessarily expect but was mostly stronger for it, I actually loved the focus on politics and human factors over technical challenges, humans are generally the biggest challenge to overcome anyway.

Definitely worth the read, and persevering when things seem a little slow.
