Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Richard Jacobson
4.0
After a colleague told me about this book, I decided to read it. He said it's a great read for middle school students. I can see how students would be ensnared by the experience of being left all alone by their parents and getting the opportunity to make it on their own.
Jack wakes up to find his mom and the car absent from their campsite. While she has left him alone before, she has never abandoned him in another state. Thinking she will return soon, Jack enjoys the first part off his day. When he realizes she may not return anytime soon, he begins to make plans to get back home without getting his mom in trouble for leaving him alone.
The ending almost brought tears to my eyes. The story should echo with the innermost being of middle schoolers as they recognize themselves in Jack. As much as the want to be grown and on their own, the still crave the security of adults and family who love them.
