A List of Cages by Robin Roe

4.0

I read Dark Room Etiquette in 2023 when it was released, and I was completely enthralled. I could not put it down until I knew how it ended. A List of Cages, albeit a bit less so, is also an intriguing and absorbing book. It evokes a great range of emotion in the reader -- oftentimes disturbing, it brings with it a sense of mental claustrophobia and fury on behalf of its characters. Our two main character Adam and Julian, are immensely lovable protagonists who you can't help but root for. So when things go south for them, you begin to take it personally.

The book touches on some very heavy topics, and it does so quite effectively. One of the enormous strengths of the book is its exploration of how deeply the influence and impact of friendship can run. Seeing such a wholesome friendship that quite literally saved a life was immensely moving, and I was teary-eyed at several points.

Robin Roe is such a talented writer, and I will gladly read whatever she releases next.
