Nightwing Vol. 3: The Battle for Bludhaven's Heart by Bruno Redondo, Tom Taylor

5.0

This was stressssssful. My goodness, there were times I had to take a break because the intensity was too much. Which is all too say, I freaking loved this book! It was action-packed, full of heart, amazing moments for Dick and Babs, genuinely fabulous cameos from the Bat-family and the Titans.

This story is a simplified look at why we can’t have nice things. Dick tries to make a difference in Blüdhaven, but those plans are quashed and undermined at every step because of the level and range of corruption. The only way through, and this is another great thing about this book, is for Dick to lean on others to help him. This volume is definitely Nightwing’s story, but instead of leaning into the idea of a sole hero making a change, the theme is that a solo hero can only effect change, or at least initiate change, by relying on his community and allies. That was what worked so well in this book.

One weird note for me was that Commissioner Maclean looked oddly like Liam Hemsworth. It’s just a strange choice to make the model so obvious. Also not sure what the younger Hemsworth did to annoy the Nightwing creators for them to model the absolute rotter Maclean on him. Other than that, the art was again lovely here. Bright colours, beautiful character designs, another glorious looking book that is unmissable.
