While I think this book is certainly better than the well of ascension, I just really liked reading (at the least for the most part) that book more since I hadn’t read about the world in a while. So, I think that maybe if I’d waited a little longer I could’ve liked this more.
Overall, there was nothing that extremely angered me, but there was also nothing that I loved. Starting with the main plots: I think that the spook C plot could’ve been entirely cut out if it wasn’t for the epilogue, and fact that the side characters (apart from sazed) would’ve have had anything to do. I think the idea of absolving all of the fault from the leader because he was being manipulated was stupid, and same with Spook. The ending of him not seeing freedom but instead chaos would’ve been so much better if he got caught up with being the hero. Then, I didn’t care about the Sazed plot, I’m not religious, so I didn’t care if got his faith back, and was kind of hoping he wouldn’t get it back. I also think that the ending of him rebuilding the world using religion because they tell us truths about the world would’ve worked better as him understanding that even tho gods aren’t real, there’s an importance to religions. And, finally, I think it was kind of dumb that Vin was locked away for so much of the story. Especially since they didn’t even use the time to reflect on her character until the very end with her saying that Ellend was a better person than her. Now, let’s talk about the ending, cause I don’t understand why it happened. Ellends character arc of not knowing if he was a good person or leader because of the things he did has nothing to do with death and his story just ends unsatisfactory. Same with vin, although, let’s be honest I don’t think she had a character arc. I also have another problem with her death: the fact that after Ellend dies she says that she has nothing to live for anymore. WHAT? She has literally never lived a regular life. Wouldn’t she want to do that? Tying her entire worth to a man felt very icky to me. I guess they say that she’s living okay in heaven??? But even that feels like a cop out. Also, I thought it was worth pointing out that I didn’t cry at the ending, which is really strange and I guess proves that I didn’t care about them. The pacing could’ve been better, but as a whole I enjoyed the book, nothing was egregiously boring or bad. But, the ending didn’t feel satisfying at all.
