The House of Fortune by Jessie Burton
3.0

there is something about a historical novel that you can eat up in a weekend....... my personal cure for reading draughts.

the house of fortune is smart, careful and the right amount of depressing. i did find it a bit repetitive and obvious at times (hence its not getting four stars) but i appreciated how it never allows itself to be too precious.

i DID miss a longer section on the rebuilding of the titular house (actually, i realise that's arguable) but i think adding that would have been detrimental to the point of the novel. by this i mean i looove literary (drawn out) descriptions of sims build-mode projects. but thats a ME thing.
