Dead Astronauts by Jeff VanderMeer
5.0

This book is challenging and perhaps at times frustrating. At times it's easy to lose the thread of story when Jeff weaves his psychedelic and ethereal language to describe the indescribable and foreign. The poetry is evocative and emotional but hard to grab real concrete meaning from. I can see how some people may find this book unreadable.

However, Dead Astronauts cuts deep to the bone with respect to mankind and its impact on and ambivalence towards the environment. This novel is so enraged at the circumstances of the climate crisis and unfettered capitalism that it's chilling and haunting.

Jeff has a way of making the readers care deeply about the plight of nonhuman objects. If you want to cry over sentient moss, this is the novel for you.
