One of THE MOST terrifying books I have ever read. Other horror or fiction I can just put away as something that will most likely never happen, but after reading this I am left with the feeling that this scenario WILL happen- it is just going to take the right nutcase to set it off.
I learned so much about nuclear warfare by reading this, like the fact that the chance of shooting down a nuclear warhead is slim to none, despite billions of our tax dollars going to fund these programs. Jacobsen is well researched and even handed; I really enjoy reading a book when I can't tell someone's politics, and Jacobsen does an incredible job of giving you the facts without preaching to you.
I also found that this book lets you know just how depraved we are as human beings. There is no safety with nuclear weapons. it legitimately is mutually assured destruction, and the only thing stopping the other guy from pulling the trigger is he knows there will be retaliation. The fact that the whole of society across the world can be destroyed by world "leaders" in less than an hours is mind boggling, but again Jacobsen presents it in a way that you can't deny. This is a lunatic ride that you will want to see through until the end, and it is quite literally THE end. A great book and read and I highly recommend it. Good luck sleeping!
