I recently got pulled back into my love for the TVD tv show, and I figured I'd give the books another shot. I read the first two books a few years ago but had forgotten most of them, so I reread them. I continue to be amused by the books description of Katherine as innocent and fragile, contrasted with the tigress-like Elena. I have some theories about why the show switched these characteristics (most of them related to sexism and appropriate roles for women). Unfortunately, I still enjoy the tv show more than the books, I think most of the characters in the books are insufferable (and what's with the high school named after Robert E. Lee? really?? Glad they changed that).
All that being said, I enjoyed the books more on this read-through. I think the audiobook reader wasn't for me, but reading it on my own was gripping. I hate Damon even more in the books, and I'm worried to see what happens now that Elena has been turned. It's interesting how quickly everything is happening, she's hardly been with Stefan a month.
