Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
by Roald Dahl
This is the first chapter book I’ve read out loud to my children as I prep my oldest to start learning to read. It’s a classic whimsical story that had a lot of laughs and held their attention well enough. Dahl was able to paint images with his words so my children could exercise their imaginations in ways they haven’t tried to before.
I had to censor a significant amount of fatphobic language while reading out loud. These passages were incredibly off-putting and unnecessary, even for the time period in which the book was written. There was also the uncomfortable slavery/“White Savior” undertone regarding the Oompa Loompas that I tried my best to gloss over. The way Wonka treated his workers as test subjects and then made jokes about it (“it always goes wrong at the blueberry pie” after he turned several workers into blueberries, the worker who refused to burp after consuming a fizzy lifting drink outdoors who Wonka jokes is probably on the moon by now
