Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
2.0

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 journeys and got hopelessly bogged down in the 3rd. I guess I'm just not clever enough for Swift's biting satire... I can handle the cruder physical comparisons, but the scientific and political commentary was both too heavy handed and too slow moving. At least the physical contrasts had some crasser humor.

I'd have given this one 3 stars if it weren't for the CRUSHINGLY boring 3rd journey, but at least the Yahoo 4th journey was pretty enjoyable. Probably because I like ponies.

I actually would have enjoyed some longer commentary essays in my edition. I'm certain I missed quite a lot of the point of the satire without any sort of expert analysis to smarten me up.

I always thought this was a book that people read for school, but I would be shocked if this were the case. I'm a pretty well-read person, but this was a bit tough to get through in parts. I think something like the Modest Proposal is really the best taste of Swift.
