Madame Bovary: Provincial Manners by Gustave Flaubert, Malcolm Bowie
5.0
The translation I read of this was absolutely gorgeous. I had to have a dictionary beside me to figure out what some of the words meant so I'm sure this is beautiful to read in its original language.
I connected with Emma's want for a life full of more passion and adventure. However, she never realises that life is not like that. I found that heartbreaking. In the end, the man that she had been annoyed by and hated for his enjoyment of a simple life, was the same man that anguished by her bedside and died with her as his last thought.
I did find the scene where she went to Homais to be told about Bovary Sr dying quite forced. It was only placed there so that Emma knew where to find poison. It didn't make sense for her to get home, be told to go to the pharmacy, then to go back home. Maybe the poison could have been mentioned during a meal scene or whilst she was visiting the pharmacist for a different reason.
I would highly recommend this as a Must Read for avid readers. The history of what happened when this book was released alone is enough to peak a person's interest.
