ecliggott 's review for:
Romantic Comedy
by Curtis Sittenfeld
I had high hopes for "Romantic Comedy," based on Sittenfeld's past books including "Prep and "American Wife." She's an intelligent, sophisticated writer and I expected her to explore the tropes of romantic comedy with a sharp and somewhat cynical eye. The book is divided roughlyl into thirds - the first describes a young woman who writes for an SNL-like TV show, and is fascinating in its depiction of a typical week in preparation to put on a weekly live comedy performance. The middle third is an email correspondence during the COVID pandemic between the writer and the show host/musical guest she was drawn to. In the final third, the two meet in real life, and that's the part that let me down because it's surprisingly cliche. Nevertheless, Sittenfeld is a great writer and I liked the book despite my own cynicism.
