The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek by Link Neal, Rhett McLaughlin

4.0

I consider myself a Mythical Beast— I am a HUGE fan of Rhett & Link and all the different entertainment they produce.

This book is no different! I loved it, and I typically don’t love realistic fiction or mysteries!

(However, I wonder if part of the joy in this book came from already loving the authors and thus loving the main characters “Rex” and “Leif”. If I had read this without having any idea who Rhett and Link were, what would I have thought?)

But anyway, here are my current thoughts: this book was NOT AT ALL what I was expecting!!!

It was exactly what I was expecting all the way up until about Chapter 16. A wild mystery starring two young teenage boys— but then an unexpected... or should I say MYTHICAL... twist was thrown in! And I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

Overall, I think the mystery was well done. The story they told was not an easy one to tell, and I can only think of a couple things I would’ve done different. (The biggest one being that the Bad Guy’s plot was spoiled for us just a couple chapters before we would’ve naturally found out in the plot. Couldn’t they just have let us find out the normal way?? Why did they spoil the evil plot? I think it may have helped the believability, but it was also a little disappointing. Another distracting aspect was the mid-scene POV switched. One minute you’re in Rex’s head, then Leif’s, then his mom’s— it would’ve been nice to have more solid POVs in scenes.)

The best part of this book was definitely the character development throughout and the comedic relief!!! I loved Rex, Leif, Alicia, Ben, Donna, Jennine, GamGam, even Mark Hornhat had his moments.

TLDR; a GREAT book if you like thrillers or mysteries, and I highly recommend it to all Mythical Beasts out there!!! Stop hesitating and go read it!!!
