It’s been a while since I read the other three books so I needed to go online and refresh my memory of side characters from time to time. To be honest, I was disappointed Marcus and Phoebe were separated for most of the book. I wanted more of their relationship.

Some parts of Marcus' backstory dragged a little. “What happened in New Orleans”—the thing that has been referenced many times—took up very little of the story. It was interesting to read about old school medical methods and such, but parts of it felt a bit like “Hamilton” with vampires.

I really liked the bits about Phoebe dealing with her transformation and learning to be a vampire.
